PARIS: Khabib Nurmagomedov surprisingly announced his retirement from UFC to fulfill a promise he made with his mother, ending his legendary career as a fighter.


The Russian fighter made this sudden announcement after defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in October 2021, which gained his undisputed lightweight champion and legendary record of 29-0. According to Nurmagomedov, the decision was made after a promise he made with his mother.


The worried mother wished Nurmagomedov to end his career as his father and coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov faced death because of the diseases caused by the Covid-19 virus. After three days of negotiation between the mother and son, Nurmagomedov decided that his fight with Gaethje would be the last.


“Today, I want to say this was my last fight. No way I’m going to come here without my father and it was the first time. She doesn’t want me to go fight without my father but I promised her it was going to be my last fight,” said Nurmagomedov.

In his speech, he also mentioned that he only had one parent left and wanted to spend more time with his mother. To keep his promise to his mother, he decided to make the announcement official that night, immediately after the win.


Additionally, Nurmagomedov also gave his appreciation to the couch as well as his teammates. He also specifically thanked the UFC president Dana White, Lorenzo Fertitta, Joe Silva who signed him to UFC, and the UFC team.


With the mark of this historical moment, many big figures of the fighters league have shared their hopes and prayers upon Nurmagomedov’s retirement.

Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is 34-year-old, retired with an undefeated 29-0 record. He scored 13 wins in the UFC and is the longest-reigning UFC lightweight champion.


Nurmagomedov held the title from April 2018 to March 2021 and was ranked #1 in the UFC men’s pound-for-pound rankings when he retired. Fight Matrix, MMA fighter ranking system portal, ranks Nurmagomedov as the #1 lightweight of all time.
